National Night Out 2008
Communities throughout the Tri-State will observe National Night Out this evening. Cities across the country will mark National Night Out to celebrate and strengthen their community, highlighting crime prevention, safety, health and fun.
The National Association of Town Watch initiated National Night Out in 1984 as a way to raise awareness and participation in local anticrime efforts. That first year, 2.5 million people in 400 communities in 23 states turned on their porch lights, locked their doors, and came outside to spend the evening with their neighbors. By 2007, National Night Out had grown to 11,000 communities in all 50 states, Canadian cities, U.S. territories and military bases around the world, and more than 35 million people participated. Matt A. Peskin, executive director of National Association of Town Watch, said "National Night Out represents the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year. It is a night to celebrate safety and crime prevention successes - and to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days." ... more>>
