But which sort to back? EVERYONE loves a booming market, and most booms happen on the back of technological change. The world’s venture capitalists, having fed on the computing boom of the 1980s, the internet boom of the 1990s and the biotech and nanotech boomlets of the early 2000s, are now looking around for the next one. They think they have found it: energy. Many past booms have been energy-fed: coal-fired steam power, oil-fired internal-combustion engines, the rise of electricity, even the mass tourism of the jet era. But the past few decades have been quiet on that front. Coal has been cheap. Natural gas has been cheap. The 1970s aside, oil has been cheap. The one real novelty, nuclear power, went spectacularly off the rails. The pressure to innovate has been minimal. In the space of a couple of years, all that has changed. Oil is no longer cheap; indeed, it has never been more expensive. Moreover, there is growing concern that the supply of oil may soon peak as consumption continues to grow, known supplies run out and new reserves become harder to find. The idea of growing what you put in the tank of your car, rather than sucking it out of a hole in the ground, no longer looks like economic madness. Nor does the idea of throwing away the tank and plugging your car into an electric socket instead. Much of the world’s oil is in the hands of governments who have little sympathy with the rich West. IMD는 2008을 55개국을 323개의 . IMD는 World Competitive Yearbook 2008을 통해 55개국을 323개의 평가항목으로 평가한 세계 국가경쟁력 순위를 발표 [미국 1위, 싱가폴 2위, 홍콩 3위, 스위스 4위, 룩셈부르크 5위의 순이며, 한국은 31위를 기록] In the IMD's World Competitiveness Yearbook, the U.S. came in first once again. But other nations are closing the gap The annual World Competitiveness Yearbook from Swiss business school IMD ranks 55 countries on 323 criteria, ranging from the per capita GDP and economic growth to exports, computer penetration, and even the cost of mobile phone service. It also includes qualitative assessments of dozens of factors, such as the level of corruption, state support for education, attitudes towards globalization, and the regulatory framework. The table below lists this year's ranking. To add a little spice, we've also included results from the World Economic Forum, which ranks countries according to their "network-readiness," or how prepared they are to succeed in the knowledgebased economy of the 21st century. A facelift and even lower prices kept the world's largest retailer afloat in a troubled economy. Staring down the barrel of brutal fourth-quarter retail forecasts, CEO Lee Scott dramatically cut prices on 15,000 items - including popular toys and electronics - by 20% more than usual to lure holiday shoppers. That rocked the industry, pressuring other retailers to squeeze already tight margins.
