E-mail: Michal.Kolcun@tuke.sk 1 DEPARTMENT'S PROFILE The Department of Electric Power Engineering at TU FEI of Košice was founded on the 1st October 1973 but it had been in preparation process since 1969 as a section of Power Engineering at the Department of Electrical Drives. Since 1.10.2003 the Department of High Voltage and its part the High Voltage Testing Laboratory were interlocked to Department of Electric Power Engineering. Currently the Department of Electric Power Engineering has 2 professors, 5 associate professors, 9 assistant professors, 5 scientific workers and 7 internal PhD students. Students are educated to solve problems in the areas of generation, transmission and effective usage of electric power by means of PC equipment and with respect to the rules of environment protection. Since 1991 the Department has been offering a postgraduate study in the field of electric power engineering. The Department staff has worked on several research projects main of which dealt with development and verification of equipment for electric power companies, conversion of sunlight power using vacuum collectors and effective energy projects consumption in the electric furnaces for thermal technologies. Nowadays research are focused on use of artificial intelligence for power system control, computer modelling of power equipment and digital relays, improving the mechanical Technical University of Košice Annual Report 2006 Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics ____________________________________________________________________________________ 2 Department of Electric Power Engineering parameters of overhead power lines, sources of renewable energy and design of lighting systems. The high voltage group dealt with monitoring, diagnostics and prophylactics of high voltage insulation of cables and electrical machines, partial discharge measurements and transient overvoltage protection electrical equipment. The department has many contacts with power companies as well as with other industry institutions and with educational and research organizations not only in Slovak Republic but from abroad, too. From December 2006 the department issues new scientific journal in electronic form “Insulation systems ageing” published on the internet www.tuke.sk/fei-kee/jses. 2 STAFF Professors: prof. Ing.
