TUTORIAL SOIL MECHANICS (ENGLISH & BAHASA MALAYSIA) SOIL COMPOSITION 1. Soil specimen taken from the construction site has following characteristics: Unit weight,  = 18.5 kN/m3 Moisture content, w = 30% Degree of saturation, S = 94% Determine dry unit weight, γd,(kN/m3), saturated unit weight ,γsat,(kN/m3), void ratio, e, air-void content, A, specific gravity ,Gs, Porosity,n. 2. Satu contoh tanah liat 0.7 kg di keluarkan dari tiub sample berukuran 50 mm garis pusat dan 200 mm panjang. Sedikit dari contoh tersebut di potong untuk menentukan kandungan lembapannya. Baki panjang contoh adalah 190 mm dan kandungan lembapan contoh tersebut adalah 30%. Juruteknik makmal telah terlupa untuk memasukkan baki contoh tanat tersebut ke dalam oven menyebabkan contoh tanah mengalami peruapan (kehilangan lembapan). Apabila di timbang semula pada keesokan hari di dapati beratnya 0.6kg. Dengan menganggap Gs= 2.7 Kirakan : a) Nisbah lompang,e, nisbah udara,A, keliangan,n, dan darjah ketepuan tanah,S, tersebut sebaik sahaja di keluarkan dari tiub sampel. b) Kandungan lembapan selepas berlaku peruapan 3. A specimen of clay was tested in the laboratory and the following data were collected: Mass before dry, M1 = 148.8 g Mass after dry, M2 = 106.2 g Volume of specimen = 86.2 cm3 Specific gravity, Gs = 2.70 Determine: a) Water content b) The bulk and dry densities c) void ratio and porosity d) degree of saturation 4. The bulk density of a sand in a drained condition above the water table was found to be 2.06Mg/m3 and its water content was 18 percent Assume Gs = 2.7 and calculate:- a) Drained unit weight b) The saturated unit weight and the water content of the same sand below the water table G s w     S 5.
