Career Guidance System Basic Tutorial for Students Tutorial support.ebsco.com Welcome to EBSCO’s Career Guidance System Basic Tutorial for Students. The Career Guidance System provides students, counselors, teachers, and parents with centralized career guidance information and exercises. In this tutorial, you will learn how to navigate among Career Guidance System’s centers, designed to help students manage education and career goals. Use the Exploration Center for researching careers/colleges, the Planning Center for organizing career and educational objectives, the Resource Center for reviewing articles/videos about colleges/careers, the Activity Center for taking quizzes/sample tests, and the Communications Center for communicating with other local users via the Career Guidance System email system. Beginning with the Exploration Center, for researching careers and colleges, click on the Assessments link to view available career and skill assessments. Click on Skills Assessment, select the appropriate radio button beside your answers to each of the questions, and then click on the Search for Career Clusters button. The resulting bar graph shows which career types, or clusters, align most closely with your assessment responses. Click on a bar in the graph to view a list of careers in that cluster. Click on a career in the list to access links to career details, such as Civil Engineer. When available, click on the occupational video link for additional information about the career. Click on Occupation Search to search a database of over 2,000 occupations, apprenticeships and military jobs. Your search can be based on your interests, working conditions, career clusters, level of education, physical ability, desired salary range, or employment outlook. For example, click on the Occupation Search link, and then the Interests link. Check the box in front of People. The number of careers based on your selections is shown. Click on the Display Occupations link to view a list of pertinent job titles. Click on a particular job title to access links to details about the job, or view the job-related video. Click on College Search to access a database of over 3,500 two/four-year colleges and private trade schools. You can base your search on geographic location, 2 year vs. 4 year, size of enrollment, community type (e.g., large city vs. small town), affiliation, cost, selectivity criteria, majors/sports programs available, or learning disability programs and support services offered. For example, click on Majors, and then select Marketing Management & Research from the resulting list. You can view the list of colleges that offer your selected major, or conduct a second search and compare the two, using the links provided. In the Planning Center, click on the Personal Information link to log in. Your assessment results are stored in the Planning Center. You can also track and manage the completion of appropriate career planning tasks, create a resume using the interactive Resume Builder, and organize and track job contacts in the Planning Center. For example, create a resume by clicking on the Career Planning Tools link, and then click on Resume Builder. Click on Edit Resume Sections button. Enter your resume details. Use the tabs to display sections. If you need ideas while creating your resume, use the Help links. When finished, press Click Here to Update all Changes. Use View Resume to modify, preview, or print. You can store your College Planning Tools in the Planning Center, configure/manage a personalized Individual Graduation Plan (IGP), configure and manage course graduation requirements, track the completion of college preparation and application tasks, track college entrance exam scores, and manage college contacts, communication, and letters. Under the Goals link, you can use the Academic, Career or Personal subtopic links to manage those interests and goals. In the Resource Center, you can browse Cool Jobs, made up of newly-created jobs, popular occupations, or out-of-the-ordinary careers, such as CIA agent, Computer Game Designer or Pet Photographer. Or, view short videos about over 100 different occupations in the Video Library. Test your knowledge in the Activity Center, select links from the table of contents to take sample History, GED, Proficiency of ACT/SAT tests. From the Communications Center, you can send a message to your Career Guidance System administrator. This concludes the Career Guidance System Basic Tutorial for Students.
